Editor’s note: This is the second in a series of commentaries about assisting the Federal Emergency Management Agency in its disaster recovery efforts in Puerto Rico.

FORT POLK, La. — I pulled my Armed Forces Devotional Book out of my backpack and placed one finger on the Lord’s Prayer, and another on the Order for Christian Burial … just so the people who found my body would know what to do.

I was sitting in the back seat of a minivan with six other souls in the vehicle, heading down a mountain in Puerto Rico on a precarious switchback single-lane road, which was being used as a two-lane road for some crazy reason. The driver was told to stay with the lead vehicle no matter what, and the lead vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed — the driver followed his orders.
