Remember area police on National Fallen Peace Officer Memorial Day

FORT POLK, La. — In the military and around the country each May, the country takes time to recognize the fallen heroes of the military that have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom on Memorial Day.

For the most part, I don’t take this day to grill out or do any celebrating in the traditional sense. I do take a moment to reflect upon the lives of those that I had the honor and privilege to serve with in a 30-year career that are no longer with us. I celebrate their lives by remembering just how much richer I am for having known them. I feel cheated that we no longer have their contributions to family, country and community.

Sadly, there is another holiday in May that is relatively unknown and scarcely recognized. This holiday is worthy of our attention, reflection and remembrance. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week.
